NADAC Class Level Descriptions
Novice Level: The main goal is to test the dog's ability to perform the obstacles safely. The dog is asked to execute the obstacles at a moderate rate of speed. A dog which performs any obstacle in an unsafe manner should not be awarded a qualifying score. Novice level includes two subcategories:
Novice A is for any dog that has not yet earned an agility certification in that class The first entry level for every class. Novice A is for agility handlers who have never earned an agility title on any dog under any agility organization.
Novice B
is for any dog that has not earned an agility certification in
any category. The first entry level for every class. Novice B
is for handlers who have earned an agility title on any other
dog(s) under any organization. A handler may choose to compete
in Novice B even if eligible for Novice A. All NADAC agility judges
must begin competition at the Novice B level.
Open Level:
For dogs and handlers who have earned their Novice certificate
from NADAC in the class being entered. The goal is to test the
handler's and dog's ability to perform the obstacles at a faster
rate of speed, while performing the obstacles with more directional
and distance control and exhibiting obstacle discrimination. The
course design should encourage the handler to work the dog from
both sides comfortably.
Elite Level:
For dogs and handlers who have earned their open certificate from
NADAC in the class being entered. More complex handler strategies
are tested, with the dog moving at a brisk pace. The dog should
work off both sides of the handler, be able to discriminate between
obstacles and freely move away from the handler while performing
the obstacles with greater distance and directional control.
NADAC Division Descriptions
Standard Division: Open
to any dog age 18 months or over.
Veterans Division:
Open to any dog age seven years or older. Dogs entered in the
Veterans' Division classes will jump 4" lower than their
regular jump height; standard course times for Regular Agility
and Jumpers classes will be 10% greater than for Standard Division,
and two seconds more will be allowed to perform the gamble in
the Gamblers class.
Junior Handlers Division:
Open to any dog which is being handled by a youth handler who
is 17 years of age or younger. Dogs entered in the Junior Handlers
Division classes will jump 4" lower than their regular jump
height, and standard course times for Regular Agility and Jumpers
classes will be 10% greater than for Standard Division. Jr. Handler
Division is not offered in Gamblers classes.
NADAC Class Descriptions
Regular Agility Class: The purpose of the Regular Agility class is to demonstrate the handler's and dog's ability to perform all of the agility obstacles.
In all /eve/s, certification in
the Regular Agility C/asses requires 30 qualifying
points under at least two different judges.
Gamblers Class:
The goal of the gamblers class is to test the course handling
strategies of the handler and to test the distance and directional
control of the dog. The dog's ability to differentiate between
different obstacles may also be tested. The gamblers class has
two distinct parts. The first part is a handler's strategy test
in which the handler must maneuver the dog among the obstacles
in any order s/he chooses. The dog earns points for each obstacle
performed correctly. The handler must guide the dog through the
course in an attempt to accumulate enough points for a qualifying
round. After the point accumulation segment, the dog must then
work independently away from the handler through a series of obstacles.
During this time, the handler must be confined to a specific area
while the dog follows commands from the handler to work its way
through a defined obstacle course which has been designated by
the judge. If the dog accumulated enough points during the point
accumulation time, then proceeded to collect enough gamble points
while executing the gamble within the time allotted by the judge,
then the dog will be awarded a qualifying round.
Jumpers Class:
The goal of the Jumpers class is to demonstrate the ability of
the handler and dog to work as a fast-moving, smooth-functioning
team. This class highlights the natural jumping ability of the
dog while testing the handler for effective handling styles while
moving at a rapid pace. The course consists of jumps and tunnels.
In Jumpers and Gamblers agility
c/asses, certification requires 20' qualifying
points under at least two different judges.
NADAC Scoring
A dog must earn 30 points in Regular
Agility classes at any level to receive a title certificate and
be eligible to move to the next level. A dog with a clean qualifying
round earns 10 points. Therefore, exhibitors will be eligible
to move up after three clean rounds. A dog which earns five or
fewer faults also qualifies but earns five points, and therefore
needs more qualifying rounds before earning a title certificate
for that level. Upon completion of a title, NADAC does not require
a dog/handler to move up. Dogs must earn 20 points in Jumpers
and Gamblers before being eligible to move up to the next level.
